A man bought this bowl for $3 at a tag sale in New York and set it on his coffee table for a few years. Turns out is was a 1000 year old bowl from the Northern Song Dynasty and it sold at auction for more than $2.22 million.
In my defense, I make it a point not to buy anything that is Made in China.
Seriously, what kind of defense is that?

ReplyDeleteHahaha Never would happen to me either. A few years ago a lady bought an old pillow at the local thrift store. She removed the stuffing to wash the cover and inside the stuffing were several hundred dollar bills. Sheesh!

I never find things like this, and never just keep to look at, it would have been found useful for something... so unlikely that it would survive more than a few months, Chez Moi!!! Great story, but the Chinese although they are buying up their history, do not have a great reputation for actually paying for it!! There is a couple in England who sold a large vase a couple of years ago and are still chasing the buyer for the money!!!! Anyway, more luck in the searching, and hugs from across the pond! janzi

ReplyDeleteGood grief! Thank goodness noone broke it while it was per hed on his coffee table! My biggest bargain was a figurine of Royal Danish porcelain, bought it for the equivalent of a few cents at a yard sale and saw on ebay that it is worth a couple of hundred dollars! :-) Pam xx

I saw that news too. Doesn't even look old to me. And wonder who paid that much money for it. We can always hope that we will find something wonderful like that on our treasure thrift hunts......can't we? That's a huge part of the fun in thrifting. Have a wonderful weekend. xo
