a promise in the air

Saturday held a promise.

A promise that spring will come.

The birds were singing, the sky was a brilliant blue, and there was a soft warm breeze blowing.

I felt my spirits lift as I took a walk in just a light cotton sweater. I lifted my face to the sun and felt its warmth for the first time in what seemed like ages.

Last night I lay awake until the wee hours of the morning. There was the sound of ice pellets hitting my window and I knew it was not a good sign.

I woke up this morning to this. Our biggest snowfall so far of the season.

I wanted to shout at Mother Nature for the tease. What happened to that promise that was in the air?

As I crunched through the snow I thought of summer and the feel of the grass beneath my bare feet.

Then I came inside to a hot bowl of lentil soup,

and I thought about the promise of spring. It will be here before we know it. Those warm days will come, the birds will sing, and the flowers will push up through the earth.

Today is a special day for me. Thirty eight years ago I gave birth to my beautiful daughter Cary. I remember the day I hiked with her on my back like it was yesterday.

Now I have watched as she has carried her own three children.

Happy Birthday, sweetheart.

P.S. If you would like my recipe for lentil soup you can find it here.

  1. You have a daughter almost my age? You look so young. We got a little spring tease yesterday. It was wonderful to have a break from the snow. Then it rained this morning and the sun is trying come out now. Sometimes winter is a tough season for me. I need sun therapy! Happy Birthday to your daughter and I loved the picture of the two of you hiking. How sweet!

  6. Happy birthday, Cary!

Sorry about the weather. But it's February, so almost the worst/most is over, right? On the downside of the hill to spring?

  8. First off happy birthday to your beautiful daughter. It's gotten cold here too with a touch of snow but it's not sticking. I'm longing for days of gardening and yard work.

  12. Happy Birthday to your daughter! That was mean of mother nature to tease you like that. That's how it was the day before our snow too. Beautiful and warm, then the next day quite the opposite. Crazy, huh? But, if all of our days were perfect, we wouldn't look forward to the good ones.

  16. Mother Nature is sometimes difficult to understand: we had some more flooding last weekend in Brittany as it was raining while the tides were huge!
I love your header and it makes me think of spring!
